Office of the Sheriff
The Hardy County Sheriff employs
eight sworn officers as Deputy Sheriffs in the Law Enforcement
Division and one in the Hardy County School system, plus three civilian Tax Deputies to carry out the fiscal
duties of the Sheriff-Treasurer, and a process server.
When openings on the staff occur,
positions are listed on this web site and advertised in the
Moorefield Examiner. Sworn law enforcement deputies are
covered by civil service regulations.
Requirements to Serve as Deputy
Sheriff
To be eligible to
serve as a sworn law enforcement officer with the Hardy County
Sheriff’s department, these are the minimum requirements:
- Resident
of Hardy County at time of appointment
- Between
21 and 45 years of age
- Complete
an Application for Appointment
- Achieve
a passing score on the Hardy County Civil Service examination
- Meet
state minimum standards on a physical agility test
- Successfully
pass a thorough criminal background investigation
- Successfully
complete the West Virginia Law Enforcement Officers training
course at the state police academy.
Duties, Pay and Benefits
Deputy Sheriffs
work rotating day and evening shifts.
While on duty they perform a variety of tasks, including law
enforcement, court bailiff duties, road patrol, accident
investigations, prisoner transport, criminal investigations, and
investigating civil complaints.
The starting pay
for uncertified deputies is $18,500 per year.
That increases to an annual rate of $21,500 when they have
achieved certified law enforcement officer status upon graduation
from the West Virginia State Police Academy.
Deputies’
benefits include:
- County-paid
medical insurance for themselves (family coverage is not
provided by Hardy County)
- Participation
in the West Virginia Deputy Sheriffs civil service retirement
program,
- 15
days annual leave per year to start
- 18
days sick leave per year to start
- 14
paid holidays per year
In addition, to
increase the accessibility and visibility of law enforcement
officers throughout the county, deputies are assigned the use of a
Sheriff’s department emergency vehicle on a “take home” basis.
