Careers with Hardy County
Office of the Sheriff

The Hardy County Sheriff employs eight sworn officers as Deputy Sheriffs in the Law Enforcement Division and one in the Hardy County School system, plus three civilian Tax Deputies to carry out the fiscal duties of the Sheriff-Treasurer, and a process server.

When openings on the staff occur, positions are listed on this web site and advertised in the Moorefield Examiner.  Sworn law enforcement deputies are covered by civil service regulations.

Requirements to Serve as Deputy Sheriff

To be eligible to serve as a sworn law enforcement officer with the Hardy County Sheriff’s department, these are the minimum requirements:

  • Resident of Hardy County at time of appointment
  • Between 21 and 45 years of age
  • Complete an Application for Appointment
  • Achieve a passing score on the Hardy County Civil Service examination
  • Meet state minimum standards on a physical agility test
  • Successfully pass a thorough criminal background investigation
  • Successfully complete the West Virginia Law Enforcement Officers training course at the state police academy.

Duties, Pay and Benefits

Deputy Sheriffs work rotating day and evening shifts.  While on duty they perform a variety of tasks, including law enforcement, court bailiff duties, road patrol, accident investigations, prisoner transport, criminal investigations, and investigating civil complaints.

The starting pay for uncertified deputies is $18,500 per year.  That increases to an annual rate of $21,500 when they have achieved certified law enforcement officer status upon graduation from the West Virginia State Police Academy.

Deputies’ benefits include:

  • County-paid medical insurance for themselves (family coverage is not provided by Hardy County)
  • Participation in the West Virginia Deputy Sheriffs civil service retirement program,
  • 15 days annual leave per year to start
  • 18 days sick leave per year to start
  • 14 paid holidays per year

In addition, to increase the accessibility and visibility of law enforcement officers throughout the county, deputies are assigned the use of a Sheriff’s department emergency vehicle on a “take home” basis.
